Singing

Intent

Our singing curriculum is designed to cultivate confident, versatile vocalists with a deep understanding of their instrument and the ability to perform across a wide range of genres. We aim to provide every student with the technical skills, theoretical knowledge, and performance experience required to reach their full vocal potential, while nurturing creativity, self-expression, and resilience.

By exposing learners to a variety of vocal techniques—including Estill, harmonic theory, and advanced resonance work—we ensure they can adapt to diverse performance contexts from musical theatre to contemporary popular music. The curriculum also emphasises vocal health, audience engagement, and self-reflection, equipping students with the personal and professional skills to succeed in further study, the performing arts industry, or as confident lifelong singers.

Implementation

The curriculum is delivered through a carefully sequenced programme from Key Stage 3 to Key Stage 4, progressively developing vocal technique, performance skills, and musical understanding.

  • Key Stage 3 focuses on building a strong technical foundation: breathing control, basic resonance, accurate pitching, rhythm, group harmonies, and sight singing. Students learn essential performance skills, microphone technique, and strategies for developing confidence. They explore both solo and ensemble work, developing an awareness of vocal anatomy, vocal health, and structured practice routines.
  • Key Stage 4 advances and refines skills: expanded resonance use, mixed vocal qualities, advanced performance techniques, genre-specific interpretation (musical theatre, rock/pop, comedy, Disney, legit, big belt, and male falsetto), and the development of personal vocal range. Learners study Estill Technique in depth, undertake genre analysis, and practise audience engagement strategies. Regular solo and group performances allow for application of technical learning in authentic settings.

Practical workshops, peer assessment, and performance opportunities are embedded throughout, ensuring students can apply knowledge creatively and critically. Technique is reinforced through repetition and progressive challenge, while reflective practice helps students track their own growth.

Impact

By the end of the programme, students will:

  • Demonstrate confident, accurate, and expressive singing across multiple genres.
  • Apply advanced vocal techniques, including resonance control, vocal range extension, and stylistic variation.
  • Understand and maintain vocal health for long-term sustainability.
  • Confidently perform solo and in ensembles, using appropriate mic technique, audience engagement, and interpretation skills.
  • Analyse and adapt their performance for different musical styles and contexts.
  • Exhibit transferable skills such as confidence, discipline, self-management, teamwork, and resilience.

Success will be evident in the quality of live and recorded performances, readiness for auditions or further training, and the ability to approach singing as both a craft and a form of personal expression.
